The first step is deciding what material to use for the band, which connects the watch to your wrist. You can choose from metals like gold or silver, leather that’s been dyed or treated, and crocodile or ostrich straps. Some bands are even engraved with the person’s name or date to add an extra layer of personalization.

Next comes the watch dial. This is where you can really make the piece your own by adding your favorite color, a personal message or an image or logo representing a passion or hobby.

Finally, you’ll need to select a mechanical movement. This is what makes the arms move and can be made to have different shaped bridges, polished with Genfer Streifen, or even be a completely custom design created for the customer.

Some brands keep the customization process a secret, but others are proud of their piece-unique creations and will ask for permission to share the work. Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo recently sold a customized Kari Voutilainen watch, for example, that was so unique it actually created a brand-new movement.
